Ministry of Youth holds its Summer Party

5 July 2010

The Ministry of Youth (MOY) forum, set up in July 2008, ran a hugely successful event for their peers at All Saints Community Centre earlier this month.

The event was hosted by Disney Channel’s Terrell Nugent, a quirky entertainer with enormous appeal to teenagers. Young people worked alongside local entrepreneur, Joseph DeGreat of Bros Inc, to offer their peers’ under16 a taste of their achievements since joining the initiative.

Entertainment
Entertainment came courtesy of performances from up and coming young British artist and cousin of Dizzee Rascal, Gracious K, most famous for his breakthrough single ‘Migraine Skank’ and other local young comedians, spoken word artists and musicians. Ministry of Youth younger’s, and volunteers, helped organise and plan the day, from set-up and manning the reception desk to supporting the workshops and helping with stage management.

Empowerment
The project’s tailored training and personal development schemes empower individuals to become peer advocates and leaders within their community and gain NVQ accredited qualifications.

The MOY Youth Forum provides a space where individuals collectively come together to take action changing negative perceptions and common stereotypes about young people and talk about issues that affect their lives, allowing them to contribute to decisions made within their community.

For a young person, becoming part of MOY will:

  • l improve access and links into local support, employment and training services;

  • l improve life skills to enhance career progression and positive life chances;

  • l offer opportunities to gain experience and NVQ accredited training in youth work;

  • l provide opportunities to participate in fun activities and socialise with other like-minded people.
Ministry of Youth is delivered by 170 Community Project in partnerships with REM Education Centre, Somerville Adventure Playground, Lewisham Youth Service, and New Cross Gate NDC. Other supporters include: Lewisham’s Young Mayor’s, Changemakers, Lewisham Mayors Fund, Headliners and Mo Shon Media. The launch event has been supported by Bros Inc.
